What's New?
Polar Power is in the process of updating the base engines used in their Marine DC Diesel Generators. Presently, we can offer the 9 to 14kW 8340VP-30 model as well as either the 15kW (low speed) or 20kW (high speed) 8340VP-30 model - with additional models to be ready soon. In addition, Polar Power has somewhat changed the process of selling and commissioning the marine generators. In the past, we were able to purchase, ship and do the on-site generator commissioning and warranty validation process through extensive on-site testing and reporting of data through Polar's GUI software.

Polar has found that with many inexperienced technicians this was a problematic process so now Polar needs to send one of their engineers to your project site to perform the commissioning and warranty validation process once installation is completed. For most projects in Canada and the lower 48 USA States Polar charges approximately $4,000.00 USD in addition to the price of the generator for this service. This cost includes the engineer's travel and accomodations as well as the commissioning procedure. Notes: Polar Power DC generators typically come equipped with the following equipment: Marinized Engine (water/glycol in the engine block coupled with a Cupro-Nickel seawater heat exchanger), 8000 Series Alternator, 12 Volt DC engine starter with a secondary 12 Volt output Alternator (smaller than the main generator Alternator) for recharging the starting battery and other 12 Volt batteries (we can also provide a 24 Volt starter and secondary 24 Volt Alternator at additional cost), Wiring harness, Supra Automatic Charging Control System. Note: Polar Generators and the Supra Control System are CANbus controlled and generally third party devices are not allowed to control generation operation. When the generator is used with lithium-ion batteries equipped with a BMS that has a Generator Auto-Start Function, you can use the the Polar e-stop for emergency shut-off from the BMS signal, or you can disconnect power to the Polar generator electronic fuel pump, or you can control the generator through CAN protocol from the BMS. If none of these options are possible, we would set the generator to Auto mode, but the main thing to keep in mind is that you cannot let the BMS disconnect the battery while the generator is running. Remote Display and Control for the Operator Air Filter Captive Vibration Mounts and Mounting Frame Polar offers their DC generators with 2 "Speed" options that relate to the kW ratings above: "Slow Speed" - this means the generator is set to run in the 1,600 to 1,900 RPM range. Customers choose this option when they want bigger fuel savings, less noise and almost double the life expectancy of the generator. The Slow Speed option also means less frequent oil and filter changes. "High Speed" - this means the generator is set to run in the 2,500 to 3,000 RPM range. Customers choose this option when they need more power and/ or faster battery bank charging. If the alternator winding permits it, Polar can program the DC generator to run in the 1,900 to 2,400 RPM range that bridges the gap between the kW output of the Slow Speed versus High Speed option. Although the Polar Power DC Generators can be configured to a wide variety of Voltages, the main big alternator is typically limited to to 375 Amps of DC current output or less. For projects requiring more than 375 Amps we often need to couple two generators in the system. *We offer a 2.25% discount for payment by cheque, Interac or Bank Transfer. Polar Power DC diesel generators can output from 12 Volts to 550 Volts DC. To accomplish this Polar has a variety of alternator windings and models to choose from. This also gives Polar generators the ability to offer specific Voltage ranges at different engine speeds. The higher the Volatge that you decide on the greater will be your choice for engine speeds. Higher Voltages are beneficial to reduce the need for higher currents.

Polar Power 6 to 15kW DC Diesel Powered Generators

Founded in 1979 Polar Power specialized in solar photovoltaic systems, solar air conditioning and refrigeration. We developed and provided photovoltaic charging controls for telecommunications in the 1980s along with DC generators for the military. In 1994 we were first to provide DC generators with remote control and monitoring to the telecommunications industry.

Polar's success is based on engineering generators to meet the very specific needs of each application. Telecom site optimization is best met with the DC generator technology as the loads and batteries are DC. It makes no sense to install an AC generator and convert the output to DC. The AC generators are designed for a wide range of applications and they are not specifically produced for telecom applications so there are issues with reliability, space, and fuel efficiency. Polar can save you considerable time and cost in permitting, installing, purchasing, and maintaining a backup generator. We reduce CAPEX and OPEX costs while improving backup reliability.

FEATURES:
SMALL FOOTPRINT. Polar's DC generator is considerably smaller in size than an AC generator. You can now backup sites that could not accommodate an AC generator. Smaller also means less cost for space leasing.

LOW MAINTENANCE. Due to oversized oil sump, and oil/fuel filtration system.

LOW ACOUSTIC NOISE. <62 dBA at 7 meters for diesel, and low vibration so as not to disturb the local residents or building landlords.

LIGHTWEIGHT. Up to 1/3 the weight of a comparable AC generator.

CORROSION RESISTANT. All-aluminum enclosure with stainless hardware for low maintenance, and long service life.

FUEL EFFICIENT. Up to 85% fuel savings due to smaller engine displacement, high efficiency alternator, and variable speed operation.

RODENT RESISTANT. Small animals can quickly destroy a generator set by gnawing on wires, fuel lines, radiator hoses, etc. Cooling air inlets and outlets have perforated aluminum screens to keep small rodents and large insects out. Stainless steel wire braid is placed over fuel and radiator lines to prevent damage.

SUPERCAPACITOR STARTER. Failure to start is the number one problem plaguing generator reliability and typically this is caused by a bad starting battery. Polar unique design has replaced the starting battery with a Super Capacitor. Capacitors are more reliable and last longer than batteries (10-15 year life).

LONG LIFE. Controls and wire harnesses are designed to exceed a 20 year life. Higher grade, longer life electrical wire (UL 3173), weather tight connectors, gold plated connector pins on signal circuits. No transfer switches are required.

ADVANCED MONITORING. Remote diagnostics, control, and monitoring. Ethernet and RS232 standard, with optional SNMP.
