Description:
For industrial, military, marine, and custom automotive applications where currents often exceed 300 Amps, Perfect Switch is proud to introduce dual battery isolators capable of handling 400 Amps, 500 Amps, and 600 Amps respectfully. Perfect Switch is a sole-source provider for solid-state, MOSFET based diodes capable of these elevated levels of current. A dual rectifier has all the same outstanding performance characteristics of a single rectifier, but provides discharge protection for two batteries; two, one-way electrical valves in a single package. DC currents will flow from the alternator to the batteries, but current will not flow between the batteries during discharge. Dual rectifiers are commonly deployed in dual battery configurations where each battery may be discharged independent of the other.

A common problem with conventional "marine" or "RV" style isolators (aside from performance issues related to the obvious Voltage drop and associated heat) is dealing with an internally regulated alternator. A dedicated excitation circuit insures hassle-free integration with internally regulated alternators. Ultra-low on-resistance means devices require no heat sinking and no airflow at currents up to 600 Amps. Dual rectifiers are encapsulated in a custom ABS enclosure and are well suited for hostile environments. POWER-GATE is recommended by top battery manufacturers to insure that DC power gets to where it's needed without the excessive heat and voltage loss typified by more common, lesser performing silicon and Schottky devices.

Included on every POWER-GATE Dual Rectifier (GEN 4.0) is a violet Alternator excitation wire. When system Voltage (12 or 24 Volts respectively) is applied, the MOSFET array located between the Main battery cathode and Alternator input anode is enhanced for a period of 60 seconds. This trigger is initiated when the violet wire is momentarily connected to the engine start circuit typically tapped at the starter solenoid, or the wires leading to the starter solenoid. When triggered, the user will note a four second delay between trigger initiation and alternator excitation. The purpose of this circuit is to insure the Alternator's regulator excites at vehicle start-up. If the starter circuit is inaccessible, the device can be factory programmed for an alternate trigger like switched system Voltage from an accessory port. If an alternate trigger configuration is required, contact us and we can consult engineering to discuss your needs.

New:
New is the addition of an optional Battery Combine feature. When the Battery Combine Feature is activated, the default isolation mode is temporarily overridden and both MOSFET arrays are forced into the energized mode. This causes the batteries to combine. For example, if the main starting battery is discharged to the point where the vehicle won't crank, by pressing a mini logic-level momentary switch, the Battery Combine feature will enable the auxiliary battery to pass current to the main starting battery, at which point cranking can take place. Once the vehicle is started, release the momentary switch and POWER-GATE will default back to its full isolation mode.

NOTE: Please use caution with the Battery Combine option, as batteries of different capacity and differing Voltages can create a large current surge between the 2 batteries. We need to be especially careful with lithium-ion battery systems where it is not advisable to "combine" or parallel different lithium-ion battery banks that have either or:

  • different Amp hour capacity ratings
  • different State of Charge readings (differing Voltages)

Perfect Switch Dual Rectifier Isolator
Information: Generation 4.1 in Large Package

POWER-GATE Dual Rectifiers allow dual batteries to be charged from a single power source like an alternator or battery charger, and discharge each battery (or bank) independently without drawing current from the opposing battery (or bank).

For example, a vehicle may have one battery dedicated to the engine (ignition, starter, EFI, etc.) while the auxiliary or "house" battery is dedicated for auxiliary equipment (lights, inverter, computer, communications, etc.) With the vehicle running, all batteries get charged to the full Voltage regulation setpoint of the alternator. With the engine off, the auxiliary battery loads (lights, inverter, computer, communications, etc.) will continue to operate and discharge the dedicated auxiliary battery independent of the main battery. If a load is applied to the main battery, current draw will be limited to the main battery and not pass from the auxiliary battery.

Conventional silicon and Schottky rectifiers can be economical, but have significant performance issues:

  • substantial Voltage drop as current passes
  • conductive losses create significant heat
  • constructed on large heatsinks requiring airflow and thermal bonding to chassis for cooling purposes
  • batteries never get fully charged
  • alternator regulators always inaccurate due to diode drop
  • limited current capability before thermal failure
POWER-GATE Dual Rectifiers utilize state-of-the-art MOSFET architecture eliminating performance and reliability issues typical of dated silicon and Schottky isolators.

Sample Applications:
POWER-GATE Dual Rectifier allows all batteries in the network to be charged. In the Diagram below, the alternator (or alternate charging source like DC shore power, solar array, or DC battery charger) is applying charging current to the anode (input) post of the rectifier. Current passes through two independent MOSFET arrays to Main Battery cathode and Auxiliary Battery cathode. Loads applied to the Auxiliary Battery are isolated from the Main Battery just as Main Battery loads are isolated from Auxiliary Battery.

The Violet alternator excitation circuit insures that internally regulated alternators are energized by the downstream battery during the engine cranking process, a necessity when placing an isolator between the alternator and the batteries.

INSTALLATION NOTE
: DO NOT CONNECT BOTH IGNITION AND STARTER: USE ONE OR THE OTHER. For many applications, it may be easier/ faster to connect the orange "starter" wire as most vehicle starters are readily accessible.

The optional Battery Combine Feature (see Notes above) causes bi-directional current flow between the two batteries when the two Green wires are joined together. Should the Main Battery be discharged to a low, no-start condition, the Auxiliary Battery can be "jumped" to the Main Battery. The use of a momentary switch is recommended to insure the battery combine feature is disabled by default.

IMPORTANT INSTALLATION NOTES:
1. When using a high capacity lithium-ion battery system AND a lead acid or AGM smaller engine starting battery we do not recommend using the "Battery Combine Feature" as it can cause problems/ unsafe conditions paralleling greatly different battery banks that could be at very different Voltages.
2. When installing this device on a high performance alternator that uses an external Voltage Regulator like the Balmar MC-614 or MC-624-H, we may need to connect the external Voltage Regulator's "Battery +" wire to the engine starting battery's positive post or to the "Main Battery" stud post on the Perfect Switch instead of the "Battery Positive + Post" on the alternator. The reason is that with the Perfect Switch dual isolator installed, the alternator's "Battery Positive + Post" does not have power until the Perfect Switch device is active and as a result the Voltage Regulator may not turn on as desired when cranking the engine. If possible, we recommend bench testing the alternator/ batteries and Perfect Switch system prior to installing on the vehicle. The best way is to follow the Alternator/ external Voltage Regulator's Installation Instructions but if the Regulator does not power up then try using this alternate wiring option of the Regulator's "B+" or "Battery Positive +" wire.

LEDs Note: The LEDs should be of the same Voltage as the native electrical system (12 Volts or 24 Volts) and the LED current draw should not exceed 60mA. The wires coming from the Molex connector are "switched to ground" when activated, so you will need to connect one LED wire to a + positive switched power source and the other - negative LED wire to the corresponding Molex connector.
Alternatively, these LED output wires can also be connected to another alarm source - such as a low current audible alarm/ buzzer device.
