Do
you need a "Series Battery Connection Harness"?
Pinnacle Innovations will be more than happy to
supply you with a high quality Custom Made Series
Battery Wiring Harness using Amercian made tinned
copper marine power cabling, tinned copper marine
cable ends with round eyelet holes, adhesive backed
heavy duty marine heat shrink tubing and the matching
Elco motor quick disconnector cable end.
We
also only use the much higher rated Class T fuse
sets made by Blue Sea Systems instead of ANL or
MEGA fuses (the ANL and MEGA Fuse holders are primarily
plastic, can overheat and come apart causing a dangerous
situation). We can also make the cables whatever
length that you may need and if you need the cables
to be longer than the standard 82" we can also
look at using larger diameter power cable.
Available
for Both Elco Inboards and Outboards and This Kit
Ships from Pinnacle Innovations, Langley, BC, Canada.

How
do you determine the Hull Speed of your boat?
This
is a commonly asked important question (mostly applies
to larger boats such as sailboats, cabin cruisers
and ships > 30 feet) because we really use the
resulting figure to let most Clients know what speed
will be most efficient for their application (generally,
going at Hull Speed/ Slow Speed is the most efficient)
and we can also use this information to determine
battery pack size.
To
figure out Displacement Hull Speed you take the
square root of the waterline and multiply it against
1.3 which will give you top speed in knots.
EXAMPLE: The water line is 25 ft so the square root
of 25 is 5 so you multiply 5 X 1.3 = 6.5 knots Hull
Speed.
If
we correctly apply this formula and select the correct
motor size the boat will run at 60% to 80% full
throttle. Adding more throttle on displacement hulls
greatly increases the power consumed with very little
additional speed.
|
Do
you need a high Voltage DC Disconnect Switch(s)?
According
to the ABYC Marine Electrical Code Book, the answer
is "YES". For all electric propulsion
maritime vessels it is required to have a manual
disconnect switch for the motor/ battery system
that can handle both the Voltage of the Elco motor
system as well as the maximum Amperage of the Elco
motor.
If
you would like, we can also supply you with 1 or
2 of the appropriate DC Disconnect Switches to make
your Elco motor system installation complete and
up to ABYC Standards. The actual ABYC Code stipulates
that we in fact should have two DC disconnects -
one for the main positive and one for the main negative
power cables.

Battery
System:
Please note that the Elco motors as priced do not
include a battery system. Customers can source their
own deep cycle battery system or we can offer a
variety of battery systems:
- Lead-acid
batteries: lowest cost, heavy, bulky, require
maintenance, lowest life expectancy/ cycle life
(up to about 600 cycles)
- AGM
batteries: moderate cost, heavy, bulky, require
less maintenance, improved life expectancy/ cycle
life (up to 1,000 to 1,200 cycles)
- Lithionics
lithium-ion batteries: best overall system
with highest performance, next to zero maintenance,
lightweight, compact and exceptional life expecatncy
- up to 5,800 cycles at 50% discharge rate. The
only downside is these batteries cost significantly
more than lead-acid batteries.
In
order for us to specify and quote a battery system
we ask that you provide us the following information:
- For
how many hours per day do you want to be able to
cruise?
- At
approximately what % of full throttle do you expect
to use on average?
- What
is the weight and size of your boat?
- What
are the physical dimensions of the battery area
that you have?
- Please
tell us about the electrical outlet(s) you have
access to to plug the battery charger into. Example:
110 Volt AC outlet on a 15 Amp circuit breaker 100
feet away from the boat.
- Please
let us know if you have any roof or deck space available
for possible rigid or semi-flexible solar panels
and the dimensions of such areas.
With
this information we can then calculate the Amp hours
of battery capacity required to give you the desired
running time before recharging. Depending on your budget
and other factors we can then quote you some battery
options. Please keep in mind that to be able to run
all day at a high percentage of throttle may require
a substantial battery bank. For many small boats (under
25 feet) we can provide an economical battery system
that can provide a few hours enjoyment but many small
boats (such as a 10 foot tender boat) may not have enough
available space or carrying capacity for a battery bank
that can run the motor more than 1 or 2 hours at high
throttle.
For
applications that require longer running times the most
economical way to go may be what we call a "hybrid-electric
battery system" where we can decrease the size
and cost of the battery system by adding a Polar Power
DC diesel generator or other type of generator.
Elco
Electric Outboard Motor Service Notes:
In the unlikely event that something goes wrong with
the Elco electric inboard or outboard marine motor there
are lights that flash on the electric controller (located
under the engine cover on the top of the motor) and
that tells us what is wrong. It really depends on what
the controller tells us as to whether the motor can
be repaired quickly and easily locally or if it needs
to go back to Elco for repair.
Elco
Inboard Motors:
Please read the instruction manual on the inboards (click
on PDF link below). We will help with a correct prop
solution: we need the boat specs and what the diameter
of the prop that the owner wants to use. It is very
important that the pitch is correct other wise the motor
will not function correctly - you can either go in over
Voltage or under Voltage and you will not get the performance
that you should from the motor and this can cause problems.
There is a procedure that is in the manual for the inboards
– you need to water test and take down the speed you
are going and the rpms and the Amps the motor is pulling
(all that is displayed on the display that come with
the unit but you will have to use a hand held GPS to
get the speed data) at first low speed, then half throttle
and then full throttle. This will tells us if the pitch
is correct and you are getting full Horsepower and reaching
1,500 RPM.

What size Elco Electric Inboard
Marine Motor is right for my boat?
There is some overlap between motor and boat sizes so choosing
the right size motor for you and your vessel can sometimes require
some personal expertise to make the right choice. In selecting
the correct size electric motor, some general tips are - in areas
with strong tides and currents, choose the next larger size motor,
and the same goes for weight - if your boat is heavy for its length,
choose the next size up.
Elco
Motor Yacht has also developed a robust and easy motor coupling
system to allow for twin or triple motor installations. This can
be used when a vessel exceeds 85 feet or if you need a faster
cruising speed. Please contact us about the motor coupling
option
by email.
The
table below serves a good starting point for most boaters. The
table also gives boaters an idea of what sort of investment they
will be looking at.

Why is our electric motor the most
efficient?
The AC induction motor is more efficient than its DC counterpart
by a factor of 20% to 40%, depending on the load. It creates a
lot more torque, accelerates faster, and since it has no mechanical
connections, other than the ball bearings at each end of the rotor,
maintenance is minimal. In short, it is a simple, rugged and reliable
design.
Furthermore,
an AC motor is more receptive to electrical regeneration - it
naturally wants to regen.
Propeller
Regeneration - Your dragging propeller is an energy resource.
Tap this energy to 'top off' the batteries while under sail.
ELCO
MOTOR YACHTS - YOU CHOOSE WHICH SYSTEM IS BEST
Pure
Electric
With the pure electric configuration, an electric motor powered
by batteries drives the propeller shaft. This system is ideal
for day cruises in displacement and semi-displacement boats such
as sailboats, launches, tenders and sloops. Installation is simple,
and the motor fits most standard engine mounts. The batteries
can be strategically positioned to keep the boat balanced.
Hybrid Electric Serial
Similar to the pure electric configuration, the electric motor
drives the propeller shaft directly. The difference is the addition
of a gas or diesel generator, which has no direct connection to
the propeller shaft. Instead, the generator powers the motor and
charges the batteries. This provides boaters with the option of
running the motor strictly off battery power for a quiet, clean
boating experience, or switching to the generator when the batteries
are low. The serial hybrid-electric configuration is great for
boaters who go on day cruises and want to have a backup power
supply should a trip take longer than battery power alone can
sustain.
Hybrid
Electric Parallel - Due to the complexity and costs involved Elco
only offers this OEM boat manufacturers.
The parallel hybrid-electric configuration features a diesel or
gas engine that is connected to the propeller shaft through an
electric motor and a clutching system. The parallel hybrid-electric
configuration allows the engine to drive the propeller directly
and charge the batteries while the electric motor is inactive.
With the flip of a switch, the vessel can switch to exclusively
power the electric motor with batteries for situations when the
engine would be inefficient.
Hybrid
Electric Parallel Serial
Elco's EP hybrid-electric parallel and serial system benefits
commercial and pleasure vessels. Tugboats employed by harbor services
can use a combustion engine to get where they are needed in a
hurry. However, most of their time is spent idling or actively
maneuvering to support other vessels. In these low-speed situations,
the combustion engine can be shut down so the system can switch
to the electric motor for more efficient operation.
